Ancient burial rituals
The arrival of the Romans in our areas also brought the Roman way of burial – the deceased was cremated, and the ashes were then placed in an earthen grave or vessel – an urn. The urns could be sumptuous glass vessels, clay pots, tiny chests made out of precious materials or carved in stone.
In the urn and beside it were placed objects related to the posthumous banquet as well as objects which belonged to the deceased when they were alive. That is why in the graves we often find vessels, jewellery, toiletries, toys, oil lamps etc.
